Brass Components for Lighting and Furniture Projects: What Designers Should Know

Brass has long been the material of choice for lamp bodies, arms, fittings and furniture details. Its warm tone complements timber, marble and fabric, and its machinability allows the fine threads and precise joints that lighting and furniture assemblies depend on. At Innovation Global Group Limited we supply a wide range of brass components to lighting brands, joinery workshops and interior designers. Here are key points to consider when specifying them.

Standard threads matter. Most lighting assemblies rely on standard threads such as M10x1 and 1/8 IPS for lamp pipes, nipples and fittings. Using standard threads ensures compatibility with lamp holders, switches and canopies sourced from different suppliers. When designing a custom part, confirm the thread standard early so prototypes can be assembled with off-the-shelf electrical components.

Arms and brackets need engineering. Wall lamp arms, pendant brackets and shelf supports carry loads at a distance, creating leverage at the mounting point. We recommend solid brass or thick-walled brass tube for these parts, with a reinforced base plate and adequate fixing points. Our engineers can calculate wall thickness and suggest internal stiffeners where a slim profile is required for aesthetic reasons.

Washers, spacers and fasteners complete the look. Visible brass washers, cap nuts and decorative screws give a refined, consistent finish to lighting and furniture. Matching the finish of these small parts to the main components avoids an unfinished appearance. We produce washers and spacers in standard and custom diameters, and can supply them pre-finished in the same batch as the larger parts.

Heat and electrical safety. Brass conducts heat well and is commonly used near lamp holders. However, finishes such as lacquer and powder coat have temperature limits, so specify heat-resistant coatings for parts close to light sources. All lighting components should be designed to allow proper earthing where required and to accommodate cable routing without sharp edges.

Furniture details. Beyond lighting, brass appears on furniture as ferrules, feet caps, edge trims, inlays and connector fittings. Brass ferrules protect table and chair legs from moisture and wear while adding a premium accent. Custom profiles can be produced by machining or extrusion depending on volume.

Consistency across a collection. Designers often develop a family of products, such as a floor lamp, table lamp and side table, that share the same brass details. Ordering components from a single supplier, in the same alloy and finish batch, ensures a cohesive colour and texture throughout the collection.

Prototyping before committing. We encourage clients to approve physical prototypes, finished in the final colour, before mass production. This allows you to check proportions, assembly and finish under real lighting conditions.

If you are developing a lighting or furniture collection, our team can help with material selection, drawings and production planning. Contact us to discuss your next project.

Brass and Sustainability: A Material Built for the Circular Economy

As more of our clients set environmental targets for their buildings and products, we are often asked how brass hardware fits into a sustainable specification. The answer is encouraging. Brass is one of the most recyclable engineering materials in use today, and its long service life means fewer replacements and less waste over the life of a building.

Brass hardware is built to last, but a little regular care keeps it looking its best and working smoothly for decades. The right method depends on whether your hardware is lacquered, unlacquered or plated, so the first step is to identify the finish. If you are unsure, check your order documents or contact our team at Innovation Global Group Limited and we will confirm it for you.

The same brass handle can look entirely different depending on its finish. A mirror-polished knob suits a classic interior, while a matte black pull fits a contemporary kitchen. How to Choose the Right Hinges and Handles for Your Furniture

Hinges and handles are among the smallest components of a cabinet, wardrobe or door, yet they determine how a piece of furniture feels every time it is used. Choosing well at the design stage avoids sagging doors, loose knobs and costly replacements later.
